Hospice Care: The Role of a Registered Hospice Nurse

Wendy Mohlman, a Registered Nurse, speaks about the role of an RN at Brighton Home Health and Hospice.

Video Transcript:

The nursing role in hospice encases so much more than medication management and nursing assessments. It also entails patient education. We come in during a time when, the family is going through a whirlwind of emotions, and the stages of grief. The patient and the family are sad, angry, confused, frustrated, and unknowing. We come in during that time and establish those goals of care. What are the goals that the patient wants? Most of the time, they want to die with dignity, comfort, and they don’t want to have pain. We come in and we spend time getting to know them, what their wishes are, what the families hopes are. So a lot of it is education, a lot of it is symptom management, but it’s holistic. That’s my favorite part about being a nurse in hospice.
