The Welcoming Prayer

Self-Care During COVID-19

Adapted from a prayer by Father Thomas Keating, The Welcoming Prayer is a favorite self-care meditation of Megan Westra, Brighton Hospice chaplain in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Throughout the pandemic, Megan has faced each day knowing she has two choices:  “I can get cynical, or I can get creative,” she says.  “Some days I choose cynicism, because in some ways, it feels easier.”

“But when I can choose creativity, there are beautiful opportunities to connect with my family, my neighbors, my patients…and my teammates.”

For Megan, The Welcoming Prayer brings on that creativity and optimistic attitude that declares, “Whatever it is that comes my way today, I can welcome it.”

The Welcoming Prayer

Welcome, welcome, welcome.

I welcome everything that comes to me today, because I know it’s for my healing.

I welcome all thoughts, feelings, emotions, persons, situations and conditions.

I let go of my desire for power and control.

I let go of my desire for affection, esteem, approval and pleasure.

I let go of my desire for survival and security.

I let go of my desire to change any situation, condition, person, or myself.
